How Long Do I Need on Skye?

Updated: Feb 13, 2022

This is a question I get asked A LOT.

How long is a piece of string?

I know a lot of people factor in a visit to Skye as a day trip, but I personally think this a huge mistake - you miss out on so much.

There are a lot of places on Skye that receive (and quite rightly so, they're beautiful) a lot of hype, but I know so many people think that's all there is to the island, and then they're astounded at the infinite number of hikes and places to see that just don't receive as much attention as somewhere like the Fairy Pools, or the Old Man of Storr (yes I'm a hypocrite).

In my opinion, you could spend an entire lifetime on the Isle of Skye, exploring every day, and still not have climbed every mountain, or hiked through every glen, or seen every loch, every bay, every beach, every cave, every waterfall.

You get the point.

So please, don't just visit for the day - not only are you missing out on so much, you are also neglecting the opportunity to be a good visitor.

For example, it's like letting yourself into a friend's house when you know they won't be at home, watching their tv all day, turning up the heating, leaving all the lights on, eating all their food, and not bothering to clean up behind you.

It's just nice to give something back. :-)

Stay for a couple of nights at a nice BnB, or local hotel - heck, even an airbnb.

And take your sweet time exploring!

Skye is not a checklist of things to tick off. You need to get out and explore the mountains for yourself, feel the salty sea air, go kayaking, go birdwatching...

Ok if you really twisted my arm hard (I bet you really want to after this post) I would say that you need an absolute minimum of 3 days in Skye. That is the minimum. Three FULL days. And even then, you have to come back because you won't have scratched the surface.

Ideally spend a week. A week is a good amount of time to do some hikes, some activities, sample some of the local food and crafts. And to just give yourself time to enjoy being in such an awesome place.

Longer is even better. But obviously you may not have unlimited funds or holiday time. So please make sure to return! You definitely will not have seen everything there is to see. And ye are dearly welcome back to Skye once again.

Contact me for an itinerary and I will help you to have to best possible time during your trip to the Isle of Skye.
