So I’m a bit behind this month with all my posts, but March’s “Skye Business of the Month” is ACE Target Sports!
ACE is about a 5 minute drive from Portree, and they offer axe throwing, archery, and different types of shooting.
A group of us went to try the archery on a cold, rainy day in September - the thought of being out on such a dreich day wasn’t appealing but when we pulled up, saw the dogs and the roaring fire, things suddenly looked so much more inviting.
We were given instructions by the lovely Steve, who has a voice that sounds like he should tell stories at a fireside for a living or have his own podcast, and he’s a bit of an expert when it comes to target sports. He managed to make fairly decent archers out of the un-sporty, un-coordinated of us (aka me). You know when you can just tell that someone really enjoys what they do?
(Also check out his children's stories about Blaze the Dog Detective.)
Our group ranged widely in age from 14 years old to 37 (I won’t tell you where I fit in) and we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
They also offer “outdoor lessons” to young people, ranging from bushcraft, navigation and map reading, to carpentry & joinery, wildlife management and outdoor cooking, as well as a whole array of interesting things in between! I thought this was such a cool thing that I needed to mention it.
In addition to all of this awesomeness, the ACE Base was built from scratch, and made almost entirely of recycled materials. It’s “off-grid” and run off sustainable energy. If they can do it…
Make sure you book before turning up so you’re not disappointed, and even on the wettest of days, don’t worry about the weather as you’ll mainly be undercover. Just wrap up warm for when you’re not stood by the fire, and prepare yourself for a warm welcome from the three dogs.
The ranges can also be made accessible when advance notice is given.
They are open Monday-Saturday, 10am-4pm, depending on the weather.
Contact them for a reservation on 01478 612081 / 07880 362320 / matt@ace-skye.com
So there you have it! Next time you are visiting Skye, be sure to book with ACE Academy, and you’ll feel like Katniss Everdeen (or perhaps Thor with an axe?) in no time at all.
